This is an interesting story by BBC about our common German cockroach (the kind that you find in a restaurant or apartment building). In the 1990’s we began to see these roaches avoid certain baits because they didn’t have the genes to digest Glucose. What is interesting, is they are showing that those roaches also genetically developed a dislike for this sugar. This became one of the first documented “behavioral resistance mechanisms” that an insect developed against pesticides. Thanks to one of my clients for providing this link! Just another reason why using an IPM (Integrated Pest Management) approach to pest control is key.
Only the British would do a scientific test using doilies, forks and knives with their cockroaches!
