WHAT ARE WASHINGTON MOLES?

Moles are small soil dwelling mammals that predominantly feed off of earthworms and grubs. In the Pacific Northwest our most common mole is the Townsend mole, which is the largest mole in North America and can easily reach 8 inches in length. Because the Townsend mole is so large, it is capable of digging deep into the soil and producing large mounds of soil above ground doing significant damage to yards and gardens.

WHY ARE MOLES IN MY YARD?

For some homeowners it appears that the mole populations have greatly increased in the Seattle area over the past couple of years. Landscape bark and grassy sod allows the moles to travel quickly and easily between the soil and the matrix above looking for insects and worms. While they are foraging like this they can do a considerable amount of damage to the lawn.

HOW DO YOU EXTERMINATE MOLES?

Baiting has to be done in the tunnels. There are specific tunnels that moles feed in, while in others the moles may use only temporarily or for nesting purposes. A mole baiting program requires finding those “feeding” tunnels and to be able to consistently treat the tunnels without collapsing or damaging them.

Your Green City Pest Control technician will locate those few tunnels where baiting can be effectively based on the dynamics of your lawn and what the mole is doing at that time.
